HerpDex: Community Species and Genetics Database

The HerpDex is Scutely’s community-built database of species and traits. The app’s trait and species data comes from here, and it’s shaped by the keepers who use it.

The HerpDex browse screen: a Recently Added row of trait submissions, a Help build the HerpDex card with Submit / Vote / Mine buttons, and a Browse by Category grid of species families.

Browsing

  • Search by species or trait.
  • Browse by family to explore what’s covered.
  • Open a species to see its profile and known traits.

Contributing

The HerpDex grows through community submissions and voting.

  1. Go to a species in the HerpDex.
  2. Submit a new trait (with its inheritance type and photos) or request a new species.
  3. Other keepers vote to approve or reject, and can leave comments explaining why.
  4. Once a submission clears the vote and review, it becomes part of the database everyone uses.

You can follow your own submissions under My Submissions, change your vote on something you’ve already voted on, and withdraw a submission of yours that isn’t going anywhere.

A HerpDex Submission Details screen for a proposed 'Dalmatian' Crested Gecko trait: an evidence photo, a Voting Status card with For / Against counts, an approval-rate bar, days left, and a summary.

This is how new species and traits get added over time: by keepers who work with them. If you spot something wrong in an existing entry, you can submit an edit for voting too.
